Concerns about Netflixs Death Note Can Supernatural Murder Translate to the States
Concerns about Netflixs Death Note Can Supernatural Murder Translate to the States The US canât adapt anime. With a few exceptions, like the Power Rangers series from the 1990s, we canât figure out how to translate Japanese weirdness into watchable live action films. Western animation does better with homaging Japanese elements, and Pacific Rim is the closest we have gotten to an anime homage. With this out of the way, let me espouse my concerns for the newest franchise being adapted: Death Note. This psychological thriller manages to reel you in with anti heroes, anti villains, and straight up heroes that suffer greatly. It explores questions about justice and how murder changes people. Netflix will release an American version of Death Note in August 2017. Light resembles an evil Tobey Maguire from a Spiderman movie. Misa is now Mia, a smoker. L is now a black man that hides in the shadows. Ryuk, the shinigami, still likes apples. I am concerned that the adaptation may be too faithful, which I donât often say. The Lowdown Death Note is a Japanese franchise, about a teen genius that receives the power to kill others. He decides to use this new power, the Death Note, to rid the world of criminals, and become a god. Light starts with those already convicted and imprisoned. The more he kills, however, the more he becomes willing to lower his ethics. When the FBI and an American detective L decide to take on this so-called God Kira and enact justice, Light takes offense. He decides that he will find out Ls name and face, so that he can murder him and avoid jail time like a common criminal. The story has been a manga, an anime, a musical, several live action films and a TV drama in Japan. Lightâs morality changes in each adaptation, but he remains a semi-sympathetic protagonist. L also has his reasons for keeping up the chase. An Imperfect Justice System There is one problem with adapting Death Note word for word and changing the setting to the United States: the US and Japan have very different approaches to justice systems. In Japan, while conviction rates are higher, miscarriages of justice are less likely. According to J. Mark Ramseyer and Eric B. Rasmusenâs essay âWhy is the Japanese Conviction Rate So High,â they explain it as incentive-based: âThat Japanese prosecutors might do very well at keeping innocent defendants out of the court system follows straightforwardly from budget constraints. Chronically understaffed, Japanese prosecutors lack the time to prosecute any but a small fraction of the suspects forwarded by the police. Rather than waste their time with dubious cases (other than the occasional politically driven corruption case), perhaps rational prosecutors prosecute only the most obviously and gruesomely guilty. â For this reason, Light in Japan resents that the justice system doesnât go far enough. He wants people to stop committing crimes, and to stop doing terrible things. In the case of Misa Amane, her parentsâ killer would have evaded justice due to red tape. Light cuts through bureaucracy by just writing a name. In the Japanese films, Light says that he wants to fix this system. The United States, in contrast, has broken justice and prison systems. Many comedians, from Adam Destroys Everything to John Oliver, have pointed out that the system strongly favors those who are affluent and white, with corporations that keep people in jail, expensive bails, corrupt cops, and overworked public defendants. We also have a prison population larger than any other country in the first world because we dont have sustainable programs for rehabilitating those on parole, or assisting the mentally ill. There would thus be a lot of problems of Light killing those convicted and serving time, especially since justice is disproportionately served. The Problems of Whitewashing Light I am concerned that they have made Light into a white American teenager, ostensibly affluent, with blond hair. Its been shown that, thanks to cultural and media biases, that Caucasians are more likely to stereotype nonwhite Americans and foreigners as criminals. And there are already dozens of authority figures in Lightâs position, who determine who lives and who dies. The Guardian has published multiple articles on them. Turning Light into a Caucasian also shuts out the role to many potential Asian actors. More than one critic has pointed this out. Keeping Light Japanese in the dramas in Japan kept him an everyman. He could have worshipers within the show, and even sympathizers. Light for all his smarts could be anyone in Japan corrupted by that power, and happened to be the genius teen of a police chief. It also implies that Light cannot be a compelling protagonist unless he is white. We saw this problem with the Ghost in the Shell film, which has lost to Boss Baby in terms of box office hits. Murder Culture in America I cant speak for Japan, but the United States has a disturbing worship of killing others, mainly non white people. In the early days of settlement, the government encouraged settlers to wipe out Native Americans and steal their land. This led to mandated genocide that continues with the Standing Rock injustice to this day. Slavery also thrived, and the brutal practices killed many in the system. Then you enter the post-Civil War area. The Ku Klux Klan and other terrorist groups would leave burning crosses on lawns and lynch black people, sometimes even children, for the crime of trying to improve their lives or even smile at a white lady. I still dread the textbook photos that show white families happily smiling in front of a hanged black man. The woman who killed young Emmet Till by accusing him of whistling at her has since recanted but refuses to apologize for her complicit racism. Modern Murder In this day and age, the worship of murder remains strong. O.J. Simpson has capitalized on his fame, as one example. Trayvon Martins death has become an icon sold on memorabilia, and George Zimmerman has become a minor celebrity for stalking and shooting a teenager. Mass shootings are nearly happening daily, according to statistics, with little to no hope of sane regulation thanks to the NRA. With this cultural context, a random American receiving a Death Note would be a really bad idea. What if you gave that power to Confederate groups in the south, or the alt-right that have admitted they want to do ethnic cleansing? You would have another genocide on your hands. Netflix Light would fit those young adults that said Heil Trump in 2016. Such an image carries horrifying implications. The screenwriter and director will have to tread carefully in August to avoid this. Making L Black Despite these points, Netflix seems to have gotten L right. L being American and the FBI participating do not change the story. Our detective wants the thrill of solving a difficult crime. He knows his suspect is in Japan, and focuses on catching Kira, rather than on the idea of justice. Light would most likely go to jail if caught, and be tried in Japan. I favor turning L into a black guy. In American media, most black people are typecast into minor roles. Our antagonist refuses to lie in a menial role. L is amoral, and sometimes stoops to Kiras level. He is also a cool, worthy opponent for Light. L as a black guy also becomes aware of the inherent American bias towards non white people. He wouldnt fear Kira because the police would try and kill L every day, on a regular basis. L would have to know about the judicial and media biases that would ensue when trying to enact justice. Thus his ethnicity some of the unfortunate implications cited above. The Verdict L may save the movie. Light and Mia could kill it. Ryuk will probably be the most accurate character. Based on the trailer, we will see a lot of creative deaths. In any case, the odds are highly against one actors ability to save a movie. I hope that the writers take into account the implications of translating such a concept. They have a lot of work on their hands. If not, however, we always have the original anime and manga to read, as well as the live action films. Lets witness a fantasy that questions justice systems, good and evil, in its original form. TOK - Does all knowledge require some kind of rational basis
The knowledge issue presented in this question promotes the examination of the relationship between knowledge and reason. The question being explored is if reason is the only basis upon which knowledge can be constructed. The term knowledge is broad, but under the perimeters of the knowledge issue, it means to have certainty on a certain topic. This knowledge refers to the creation of certainty about an ambiguous situation. It can be the product of critical thinking about any of the ââ¬Å"ways of knowing,â⬠or it can be certainty about personal situations. Knowledge is not truth but certainty. Certainty is a personal position and this is one of the major perimeters of the knowledge issue. Rational basis (i.e. reason) is a way of knowingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to the definition of a rational basis, ââ¬Å"a way of knowing in which one compiles historical information about similar situations in the past, and extrapolates to find certainty,â⬠their kno wledge of religion is rational. They are using previous knowledge and extrapolating to validate the existence of a god or spiritual power. Belief is a strong way of knowing and religion is an exemplification of it. In contradiction to the counter-claim, religious beliefs are often accepted and then validated, meaning that they were believed before reasoned, and the knowledge was created by belief and only strengthened by the reason generated by these personal experiences. Religion is an example of how knowledge doesnââ¬â¢t have to have a rational basis, but how often can knowledge be created based on belief? Is religion the only example of knowledge based on belief? Religion is one of the only publicly accepted beliefs that creates knowledge without the influence of reason, however a personal belief can create knowledge. Personal beliefs are less common. This is because knowledge-based beliefs donââ¬â¢t make sense. They arenââ¬â¢t based on anything but inner-confiden ce. When millions of people share the belief, it is easy to follow, but people often wonââ¬â¢t allow their beliefs to thrive. These beliefs often have to do with personal potential, or a situation with the odds stacked against it. Leadership Strategies For A Leader - 1116 Words
Helping organizations to create and achieve goals is an essential part of what it means to be a leader. Goals provide direction for followers and set priorities (Leadership Strategies [L.S.], 2015, figure 1). Gen. Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, claimed that Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand. (Tayor, 2015, para. 4). In essence, great leaders are able to sift through the distractions that pull organizations and individuals in a multitude of different directions, and are able to unify their efforts under one banner. Leaders determine the vision, and then utilize goals to make that vision a reality. Goals provide aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These plans can be very small in scope and applied only to specific areas or compartments within an organization. Short term tactical plans can be utilized as a means of fulfilling the strategic plans, or long term goals, of an organization, while strategic plans are the medium through which leaders fulfill the vision of an organization in its entirety. This paper will examine how both strategic and tactical planning are utilized by companies in the achievement of goals, and will explain at which points of the process one or the other should be used. One definition of strategic planning that has been put forth is ââ¬Å"Strategic planning is gaining insights about where you are now, gathering the information that identifies where you should be in the future, generating the decisions that will give you a unique position, and then defining the actions that will bridge the gapâ⬠(Lake, 2012, p. ix). By utilizing this definition as a rubric, a step by step process by which to accomplish strategic planning becomes apparent. The first step is to develop and in depth understanding of the organizations current state of affairs. This includes understanding general questions such as what the business of the organization is, why it is unique, and what is important to its overall success (Lake, 2012, p. 2). It also includes examining past achievements and short comings as well as considering what value

Upon Looking Back At Our YED Dishes, We Noticed Some Areas Of Bacteria
Upon looking back at our YED dishes, we noticed some areas of bacteria growing on the outer edges of the plate as well as a very bad permeated throughout the room. The only signs of cross contamination that we observed happened when the diploid strains out grew their respected cells and began to move onto other cells areas. However, this was no cause for alarm because we had already recorded our observations and no longer needed the plates. Discussion: The process of sexually reproduction between stains of yeast begins with haploid gametes. The gametes code for dominant and recessive traits which on passed on to the next generation. In this lab's case, the R genotype coded for color with a cream color being dominant and red color being recessive. The T genotypes coded for the ability to grow in an MVA environment with growth being dominant and not growing being recessive. The haploid gametes combine together and produced diploid offspring which includes traits from both haploid gametes. However, the dominant and recessive traits determine the color and growth of the diploid offspring. My results completely reinforce the principles of dominant and recessive traits in sexual reproduction in that my partner I observed growth and color patterns that were identical to our projected phenotypes in the hypothesis. For the color phenotype ratio we counted 4 out 12 cells with red growth or 1:3 ratio. As for the growth on MVA phen otype ratio we again counted 4 out of 12 cells that did not grow on the MVA or 1:3 ratio. My group collected such accurate date because we meticulously made sure that contamination was kept to minimum. This lab has parallels with Mendal's experiments with peas. Mendal found that when two genes of a pair are different alleles, one is fully expressed or dominant and the other has no effect on or is recessive. Mendal also found that the first generation of offspring produces the entire dominant trait. However, the second generation of a hybrid cross produces offspring in a 3:1 ratio where the dominant alleles are expressed 3 times for every one recessive allele. This must mean that the haploid gametes represent the first generation and the diploid colonies must represent the second generation of offspring because they produced offspring in a 3:1 ratio. Conclusion: My group's results reinforce the hypothesis for the phenotypes. Our offspring in the YED plate grew with 4 out of 12 cells producing red growth for a 1:3 ratio. Once we transferred the diploid strains onto the MVA plate, again, 4 out of 12 did not grow or 1:3. These results not only reflect good lab work, but theses also coincide with Mendal's principles of inheritance. USS Maryland (BB-46) in World War II
USS Maryland (BB-46) in World War II USS Maryland (BB-46) was the second ship of the US Navys Colorado-class of battleship. Entering service in 1921, the battleship briefly served in the Atlantic before spending the majority of its career in the Pacific. At Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when theà Japanese attacked, Maryland sustained two bomb hits but remained afloat and endeavored to fight off the enemy aircraft. Repaired after the attack, the battleship played a support role in the early campaigns in the Pacific such theà Battle of Midway. In 1943, Maryland joined in the Allies island-hopping campaign across the Pacific and routinely provided naval gunfire support for troops ashore. The following year, it joined several other Pearl Harbor survivors in dealing out revenge on the Japanese at the Battle of Surigao Strait. Marylands later activities included supporting the invasion of Okinawa and aiding in transporting American troops home as part of Operation Magic Carpet. Design The fifth and last classà of Standard-type battleshipà (Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Tennessee) developed for the US Navy, the Colorado-class represented an evolution of its predecessors. Conceived prior to the building of the Nevada-class, the Standard-type approach called for battleships that had common operational and tactical characteristics. These included the employment of oil-fired boilers rather than coal and the use of anà ââ¬Å"all or nothingâ⬠armor scheme. This armor arrangement saw key areas of the vessel, such as magazines and engineering, heavily protected while less important areas were left unarmored. In addition, Standard-type battleships were to have a tactical turn radius of 700 yards or less and a minimum top speed of 21 knots. à Though similar to the preceding Tennessee-class, the Colorado-class mounted eight 16 guns in four twin turrets as opposed to the earlier vessels which carried twelve 14 guns in four triple turrets. The US Navy had been assessing the use of 16 guns for a few years and following successful tests of the weapon, discussions commenced regarding their use on the earlier Standard-type designs. This did not move forward due to the cost involved in altering these battleships and increasing their displacement to accommodate the new guns. In 1917, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels finally permitted the use of 16 guns on the condition that the new class not incorporate any other major design changes. The Colorado-class also carried a secondary battery of twelve to fourteen 5 guns and an anti-aircraft armament of four 3 guns. à Construction The second ship of the class, USS Maryland (BB-46) was laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding on April 24, 1917. Construction moved forward on the vessel and on March 20, 1920, it slid into the water with Elizabeth S. Lee, daughter-in-law of Maryland Senator Blair Lee, acting as sponsor. An additional fifteen months of work followed and on July 21, 1921, Maryland entered commission, with Captain C.F. Preston in command. Departing Newport News, it conducted a shakedown cruise along the East Coast. Jones, Maryland traveled extensively in 1922. After taking part in graduation festivities at the US Naval Academy, it steamed north to Boston where it played a role in celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Embarking Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes on August 18, Maryland transported him south to Rio de Janeiro. Returning in September, it took part in fleet exercises the following spring before shifting to the West Coast. Serving in the Battle Fleet, Maryland and other battleships conducted a goodwill cruise to Australia and New Zealand in 1925. Three years later, the battleship carried President-elect Herbert Hoover on a tour of Latin American before returning to the United States for an overhaul. Pearl Harbor Resuming routine peacetime exercises and training, Maryland continued to largely operate in the Pacific during the 1930s. Steaming to Hawaii in April 1940, the battleship took part in Fleet Problem XXI which simulated a defense of the islands. Due to rising tensions with Japan, the fleet remained in Hawaiian waters following the exercise and shifted its base to Pearl Harbor. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Maryland was moored along Battleship Row inboard of USS Oklahoma (BB-37) when the Japanese attacked and pulled the United States into World War II. Responding with anti-aircraft fire, the battleship was protected from torpedo attack by Oklahoma. When its neighbor capsized early in the attack, many of its crew jumped aboard Maryland and aided in the ships defense.à In the course of the fighting, Maryland sustained hits from two armor-piercing bombs which caused some flooding. Remaining afloat, the battleship departed Pearl Harbor later in December and steamed to Puget Sound Navy Yard for repairs and an overhaul. Emerging from the yard on February 26, 1942, Maryland moved through shakedown cruises and training. Rejoining combat operations in June, it played a support role during the pivotal Battle of Midway. Ordered back to San Francisco, Maryland spent part of the summer in training exercises before joining USS Colorado (BB-45) for patrol duty around Fiji. Island-Hopping Shifting to the New Hebrides in early 1943, Maryland operated off Efate before moving south to Espiritu Santo. Returning to Pearl Harbor in August, the battleship underwent a five-week overhaul which included enhancements to its anti-aircraft defenses. Named flagship of Rear Admiral Harry W. Hills V Amphibious Force and Southern Attack Force, Maryland put to sea on October 20 to take part in the invasion of Tarawa. Opening fire on Japanese positions on November 20, the battleship provided naval gunfire support for the Marines ashore throughout the battle. After a brief voyage to the West Coast for repairs, Maryland rejoined the fleet and made for the Marshall Islands. Arriving, it covered the landings on Roi-Namur on January 30, 1944, before aiding in the assault on Kwajalein the following day.à With the completion of operations in the Marshalls, Maryland received orders to commence an overhaul and re-gunning at Puget Sound. Leaving the yard on May 5, it joined Task Force 52 for participation in the Marianas Campaign.à Reaching Saipan, Maryland commenced firing on the island on June 14. Covering the landings the next day, the battleship pounded Japanese targets as the fighting raged. On June 22, Maryland sustained a torpedo hit from a Mitsubishi G4M Betty which opened a hole in the battleships bow. Withdrawn from the battle, it moved to Eniwetok before proceeding back to Pearl Harbor. Due to the damage to the bow, this voyage was conducted in reverse. Repaired in 34 days, Maryland steamed to the Solomon Islands before joining Rear Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorfs Western Fire Support Group for the invasion of Peleliu. Attacking on September 12, the battleship reprised its support role and aided Allied forces ashore until the island fell. Surigao Strait Okinawa On October 12, Maryland sortied from Manus to provide cover for the landings on Leyte in the Philippines. Striking six days later, it remained in the area as Allied forces went ashore on October 20. As the wider Battle of Leyte Gulf commenced, Maryland and Oldendorfs other battleships shifted south to cover the Surigao Strait. Attacked on the night of October 24, the American ships crossed the Japanese T and sank two Japanese battleships (Yamashiro Fuso) and a heavy cruiserà (Mogami). Continuing to operate in the Philippines, Maryland sustained a kamikaze hit on November 29 which caused damage between the forward turrets as well as killed 31 and wounded 30. Repaired at Pearl Harbor, the battleship was out of action until March 4, 1945. à Reaching Ulithi, Maryland joined Task Force 54 and departed for the invasion of Okinawa on March 21. Initially tasked with eliminating targets on the islands south coast, the battleship then shifted west as the fighting progressed. Moving north with TF54 on April 7, Maryland sought to counter Operation Ten-Go which involved the Japanese battleship Yamato. This effort succumbed to American carrier planes before TF54 arrived. That evening, Maryland took a kamikaze hit on Turret No.3 which killed 10 and injured 37.à Despite the resulting damage, the battleship remained on station for another week. Ordered to escort transports to Guam, it then proceeded to Pearl Harbor and on to Puget Sound for repairs and an overhaul. à Final Actions Arriving, Maryland had its 5 guns replaced and enhancements made to the crews quarters. Work on the ship ended in August just as the Japanese ceased hostilities. Ordered to take part in Operation Magic Carpet, the battleship assisted in returning American servicemen to the United States. Operating between Pearl Harbor and the West Coast, Maryland transported over 8,000 men home before completing this mission in early December. Moved into reserve status on July 16, 1946, the battleship left commission on April 3, 1947. The US Navy retained Maryland for another twelve years until selling the ship for scrap on July 8, 1959.

Harald Bluetooth, Former King of Denmark and Norway
Harald Bluetooth, Former King of Denmark and Norway Harald Bluetooth (c. 910ââ¬âc. 987), otherwise known as King Harald I of Denmark, was best known for three major achievements. First, he completed the work of unifying Denmark under a single ruler. Second, he conquered Norway- an event which had major historical consequences. Finally, he converted the Danes and Norwegians to Christianity. The dynasty he founded went on to rule over an increasingly large kingdom that, at its height, included much of the British Isles and parts of Sweden. His mother was Thyra, whose father was a nobleman of Sunderjylland (Schleswig). Gorm had established his power base in Jelling, in northern Jutland, and had begun to unify Denmark before his reign was over. Thyra was inclined toward Christianity, so it is possible that young Harald had a favorable view toward the new religion when he was a child, even though his father was an enthusiastic follower of the Norse gods. So fierce a follower of Wotan was Gorm that when he invaded Friesland in 934, he demolished Christian churches in the process. This was not a wise move; shortly after that he came up against the German king, Henry I (Henry the Fowler); and when Henry defeated Gorm, he forced the Danish king not only to restore those churches but to grant toleration to his Christian subjects. Gorm did what was required of him but died a year later, leaving his kingdom to Harald. Haralds Reign Harald set out to continue his fathers work of unifying Denmark under one rule, and he succeeded very well. To defend his kingdom, he strengthened existing fortifications and built new ones. The Trelleborg ring forts, which are considered among the most important remains of the Viking age, date to his reign. Harald also supported the new policy of toleration for Christians, allowing Bishop Unni of Bremen and Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Corvey to preach the gospel in Jutland. Harald and the bishop developed a cordial working relationship, and although he did not agree to get baptized himself, Harald appears to have supported the spread of Christianity among the Danes. Once he had established internal peace, Harald was in a position to take an interest in external matters, especially those concerning his blood relatives. His sister, Gunnhild, fled to Harald with her five sons when her husband, King Erik Bloodaxe of Norway, was killed in battle in Northumberland in 954. Harald helped his nephews reclaim territories in Norway from King Hakon. He was met with serious resistance at first and Hakon even succeeded at invading Jutland, but Harald was ultimately victorious when Hakon was killed on the island of Stord. Haralds Christian nephews took possession of their lands and, led by Harald Greycloak (the eldest nephew), they embarked on a campaign to unify Norway under one rule. Unfortunately, Greycloak and his brothers were somewhat heavy-handed in spreading their faith, breaking up pagan sacrifices and despoiling pagan places of worship. The unrest that resulted made unification an unlikely prospect and Greycloak began to forge alliances with former enemies. This did not sit well with Harald Bluetooth, to whom his nephews owed much for his aid in obtaining their lands, and his concerns were borne out when Greycloak was assassinated, ostensibly by his new allies. Bluetooth took the opportunity to assert his rights over Greycloaks lands and was able to take control of Norway not long after. In the meantime, Christianity had been making some notable headway in Denmark. The Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great, who professed a deep devotion to the religion, saw to it that several bishoprics were founded in Jutland under papal authority. Due to conflicting and unsubstantiated sources, it is not clear exactly why this led to war with Harald; it may have something to do with the fact that these actions made the dioceses exempt from taxation by the Danish king, or perhaps it was because it made the territory appear to be under Ottos suzerainty. In any case, war ensued, and the exact outcome is also unclear. Norse sources maintain that Harald and his allies held their ground; German sources relate that Otto broke through the Danevirke and imposed strictures on Harald, including making him accept baptism and evangelize Norway. Whatever burdens Harald had to deal with as a result of this war, he showed himself to retain considerable clout in the following decade. When Ottos successor and son Otto II was busy fighting in Italy, Harald took advantage of the distraction by sending his son, Svein Forkbeard, against Ottos fortress in Slesvig. Svein captured the fortress and pushed the emperors forces southward. At the same time, Haralds father-in-law, the king of Wendland, invaded Brandenburg and Holstein and sacked Hamburg. The forces of the emperor were unable to counter these attacks, and so Harald reclaimed control of all of Denmark. Death In less than two years, Harald had lost all the gains he had made in Denmark and was seeking refuge in Wendland from his son. Sources are silent as to how this turn of events came to be, but it may have had something to do with Haralds insistence on converting his people to Christianity when there was still a considerable number of pagans among the nobility. Harald was killed in battle against Svein in or around 987; his body was brought back to Denmark and laid to rest in the church at Roskilde. Legacy Harald was by no means the most Christian of medieval kings, but he did receive baptism, and he did do what he could to promote the religion in both Denmark and Norway. He had his fathers pagan tomb converted to a Christian place of worship. Although the conversion of the populace to Christianity was not completed in his lifetime, he did allow a fairly robust evangelization to take place. In addition to constructing the Trelleborg ring forts, Harald extended the Danevirk and left a remarkable runestone in memory of his mother and father in Jelling. The modern Bluetooth technology used to connect electronic devices was named for the ancient Viking king. According to Jim Kardach, one of the founders of Bluetooth SIG: ââ¬Å"Harald had united Denmark and Christianized the Danes! It occurred to me that this would make a good codename for the program. At this time I also created a PowerPoint foil with a version of the Runic stone where Harald held a cellphone in one hand and a notebook in the other and with a translation of the runes: Harald united Denmark and Norway and Harald thinks that mobile PCââ¬â¢s and cellular phones should seamlessly communicate. The New age Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The New age - Essay Example Unlike many other religions that teach man is inherently a sinner unless cleansed, Scientology upholds that man is good. It teaches that man is his own soul that is immortal, and it is not a virtue that he possess, but rather, he is that virtue. Among the many appeals of Scientology is that the faithful believe what they please. It is also an applicable technology that answers questions on life, enabling people to have an insight of who they are (Lewis, 2007). Question Two The key contrasting aspect between religion and science is that religion presents statements that are absolute, while science develops from relative theories and truths of the forces and processes of nature. Religious statements can neither be proved right nor wrong, while scientific theories can bear their own evidence of falsehood or truth. Religion, unlike science, claims to have absolute knowledge on all arguments presented to it. While religious arguments are faith based, an authoritative, scientific theory wi ll demand evidence. It seeks to employ rational and realistic methods to gather information that helps to answer human curiosities and all its claims are open to criticisms that can prove otherwise. On the other hand, religion does not welcome criticism because of its faith foundation. It is mainly based on revelations from a divine being, and criticizing religion is considered a sin since faith does not seek proof. Question Three Globalization is the interaction and integration process between governments, organizations and people of different countries promoted by international investments and trade and encouraged by advances in information technology. It affects the culture, environment and economic trends of communities in the world, while also impacting political systems of all countries trading together. Technology and policy developments have led to tremendous increases in international trade volumes, making them cheaper and moving faster to more destinations. In the same sen se, the failures and shortcomings of humans are exhibited and exchanged among the trading partners because of the increased interconnectedness. In other words, atheism is spreading values that do not contribute towards the flourishing of human moral life. For example, technologies available can be used to sell pornography without easy detection. Human trafficking can also be conducted alongside trade as atheism poses long running challenges to freedom of cultures around the world. Demeaning and false ideas are spread faster than wholesome values and the poor, disabled and elderly become marginalized as atheism does not uphold the value of human life. Question Four Secularism can be viewed in two aspects. First, it is the government principle that gives the right not to be oppressed to any religious group by another one. Secondly, it is the separation of the state and its institutions from religious institutions and dignitaries. In the second sense, it thus implies that citizens are free from state imposed religions and the state takes a neutral stand on belief matters. Political activities of that state are not biased by religious manipulations. It is better for states to remain secular for the sake of practicing democracy. A country with mixed cultures and religion should be allowed to practice their preferred faith without being a nuisance or danger to the society. Question Five The Wicca Churchââ¬â¢

The Social Problem of Bullying Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Social Problem of Bullying - Research Paper Example The dependent variable in the proposed research will consist of the rate of bullying evident in a variety of schools having different characteristics, expressed as a percentage. à As such the dependent variable will be a ratio-type variable, having the ability to be expressed as a measurable number of fine distinctions possible as to quantity. à The independent variables to be utilized for this study will be drawn from data provided in the Statistical Abstracts, including age-level of students (expressed as an ordinal variable measured as elementary, middle, of high school), enrollment of school (expressed as ordinal breakdowns determining the size of schools), and minority enrollment within schools (again expressed as an ordinal breakdown). à It is expected that these different independent variables will each have an impact on the rate of bullying, as they determine the developmental age of students, as well as the size and supposed social stresses and inter-community cohesion of the various school types. à The proposed relationships of the variables will be asà The basic research problem will be to discover how the age and population characteristics of a given school are associated with incident rates of bullying. It is expected that the older the student population, the more likely it will be that bullying will be prevalent, largely because the students will be more likely to be willing to use coercion and violence against their peers as they grow into their own independence. This leads to the following hypothesis. H1. The older the student population, the higher the rate of bullying that will exist. Similarly it is expected that the larger a school is the more likely bullying will be prevalent, because (1) the school community will be more difficult to govern, and (2) the larger number of students will likely include more of the personality type that is prone to violence and bullying. This results in the second hypothesis. H2. The larger the school, the higher the rate of bullying that will exist. Finally, it is expected that the higher the rate of minority students within a given school, the more likely bullying will be prevalent. It is expected that two factors will work toward this end. First, the prevalence of more diverse communities will likely result in more social cohesion problems at this developmental age. Second, it is expected that minority students will be more likely to be involved in bullying, either as its victims, or as perpetrators, as they seek to express their own independence. This leads to the third hypothesis. H3. The larger the minority enrollment, the higher the r

The Reality of Television Essay -- TV Romance Celebities Papers
The Reality of Television Through the years, many of us have watched as celebrity couples have come together and then grown apart before our very eyes. It has become part of the American culture to be informed of what almost every celebrity icon is doing, and who they are with at the moment. Couples that were once said to be invincible proved everybody wrong, and let the pressure of being famous take over their lives. Though some couples do stay together, most tend to fall under the pressure of the media and break up. Couples such as Kate Winslet and Jim Threapleton, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and the famous Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are good examples of relationships that have failed as a result of the media. Kate Winslet and Jim Threaoleton said that the pressure of fame split their beautiful relationship. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise who were known to be the hottest and strongest Hollywood couple proves the whole world enough by announcing their divorce after eleven years of marriage and adopting two children. Jennifer Lopez is not an unknown name in Hollywood when it comes to relationships. Known as the queen of jumping around from man to man, she has thus proved herself not to be as strong as she appears. From two previously failed marriages before, she has recently broken off her engagement to Ben Affleck. But the one question that still remains in everybody's heads is; "why do these relationships that start out so strong eventually fail?" One could say that the celebrities arenââ¬â¢t at fault. With the media following a coupleââ¬â¢s every move; it would be hard to get a private moment. Another problem that many celebrity couples have is the difference of fame. What? Academic Motivation Essay
After the excitement and anticipation of entering college have passed and the semester is well underway, have you found yourself less and less motivated to study, or even to attend class? Although you have more or less settled down and adjusted to living away from home, making new friends, and being on your own, are you finding that the academic area just doesnââ¬â¢t seem to hold your interest? If this is true, perhaps you need to explore your motivation in attending college. This is often a complicated matter and requires your honest assessment of yourself and of your feelings. The following suggestions are initial steps in examining your own academic motivations. 1. First and most importantly, ask yourself why are you in college. There are probably several reasons, the most important of which should be to get an education and to expand your mind by learning. In doing so, you look forward to increasing your value in the job market, but your immediate goal as a student is to learn as much as possible during your college years. Some reasons which people often place at the top of the list, but which are usually poor reasons are: a.Your parents wanted you to come. b.All your friends came to college. c.You want to postpone getting a job. d.You want to have fun. e.You want to get a start as an athlete. f.You want to look for a spouse. g.You didnââ¬â¢t know what else to do. See more: Sleep Deprivation Problem Solution Speech Essay 2. Begin the process of making a career decision as soon as possible. It isnââ¬â¢t necessary that you make a specific decision right away, but having a career direction will increase your motivation. Others (including parents) may be able to offer helpful advice, but the final choice for a career should be yours. 3. When exploring career options, be REALISTIC. You should consider your abilities, values, and interests in evaluating career options. The fact that your great uncle (or your roommateââ¬â¢s brother) chose medicine or law as a career doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that should be your choice. 4. When you have decided on a career direction, you are then able more appropriately to choose a major. The course you attempt will begin to become more relevant, and youââ¬â¢ll be more motivated to study. 5. Examine your attitudes about college and yourself. If you positively approach your studies, your professors, your books, your fellow students, and yourself, you increase your academic motivation. A negative attitude produces negative results in performance. Beware of unexplored anger which can interfere with learning. Unresolved anger and unrealistic expectations of others only lead to frustration and disappointment. Remember, you are in charge of only one person and not of everyone you have contact with or of every situation you face. Donââ¬â¢t waste your energy on negative attitudes toward persons or situations you canââ¬â¢t control. 6. Become actively involved in the learning process. Participate in your class; be over-prepared (rather than under-prepared) for class discussions and exams. Donââ¬â¢t expect the professor to teach you everything. Instead make it a point to learn by additional self-directed study. As you become more involved, you tend to learn more. 7. Remember that college is not high school. If you follow the same old patterns, you may be a loser! In college you are responsible for yourself, your courses, your study hours, your social behavior, managing your time, setting limits, managing your money, and sustaining mental and physical health. Are you mature enough to handle all of this? Everyone isnââ¬â¢t; so, donââ¬â¢t feel you are a failure if you experience problems. The important thing is to recognize the problem and seek help! There are many people on campus who can help if you will look for them. 8. Make time for recreation. It is important to spend time away from studies in activities which are relaxing. Recreation and relaxation allow you to be more productive all around. 9. Set some goals. If you clearly state what you want to accomplish and how you can accomplish it, you are much more motivated and more likely to succeed. Write these goals down on paper along with concrete steps for reaching them. Then occasionally review these goals to see what success you are having. 10. Dwell on your successes and not your failures. Where is it written that you are not allowed to fail or miss the mark on occasion? Be kind to yourself and be proud of your strong points. Try to understand why you do not do other things well. Perfection is an uncomfortable companion or goal. 11. Never lose sight of the fact that you are responsible for your life and what you do with it. Problems arise when you feel like a slave. Remember, it should be your choice to be doing what you are doing. Ultimately, you are in control even when others ask or seemingly demand something of you. 12. Be flexible and adaptable. Be open to new experiences and receptive to new ways of looking at things. This allows growth and new learning. 13. Maintain a calendar or schedule. By so doing you will be aware of and better prepared for assignments and activities and can allot and schedule additional study time when needed. Keep a calendar so youââ¬â¢ll know when you should be more motivated. 14. Donââ¬â¢t expect to be motivated 100% of the time. We all have our ups and downs. Try to be aware of too many ââ¬Å"downs,â⬠find out why, and do something about them. The suggestions offered here are only a beginning for self-examination. Motivation is a complicated matter. These suggestions may be enough to help you become aware of what is affecting your motivationââ¬âor lack of itââ¬âbut if youââ¬â¢d like further exploration, give us a call at 348-5175 or visit the Center for Academic Success, 124 Osband Hall.

The Theories Of Crime, Albert Cohen s Theory Of...
Dr Simon Cottee (2011), for example, took an other approach to translate the terroristic behavior, he described Marc Sageman s seminal research on Al Qaeda, into one amoung the most famous behavioral theories of crime, Albert Cohen s theory of delinquent subcultures. (Cottee, 2011) In his other collaborative reserch, issued the same year, Cottee Hayward (2011), searched for the explaination of ââ¬Å"of possible existential motivations for engaging in terrorism.â⬠Where they have identified three principale explaination amoung the others, like: ââ¬Å"(1) the desire for excitement, (2) the desire for ultimate meaning, and (3) the desire for glory.â⬠I would add my personal opinion here, 5 years passed after this reserch has been issued. We had 9/11, as a major concern and the biggest signature of the Islamic terrorists at this time, but America didn t went to Iraq at this time, consequently we had no Charlie Hebdo, Bataclan and others attacks. If now we try to apply the theory of the à « The Existential Attractions of Terrorism à » (Cottee Hayward, 2011), we will fast realize that none of these 3 categories give an explaination, of those recent acts, which were driven by the religious motivations for and were purely base on hate and punisment constructed on the Islamic order disrespect ( according to the terrorists). By the time Tom and I had met up and ready to go on our mission, it was already dark out. The perfect time of day for this type of mission. Apparently, we were not as sneaky as I thought we were at the time. Transformation of dracula Free Essays
Transformation of Drachma Drachma Is a timeless novel written by Abram Stoker and to this day remains a thrilling read about good vs. evil In the form of Van Helping and his companions pitted against the supernatural forces of Count Drachma, the vampire from Transylvania. Not only was this novel about good vs. We will write a custom essay sample on Transformation of dracula or any similar topic only for you Order Now . Evil but upon inspection found to have many themes and views relevant to the time it was written. This caused it to be a huge success of its time and in 1922 the German director Murmur seeing the success of the story put it under transformation and named it Nonstarter. This silent film was very similar to Drachma except It was more relevant to the times It was written In. Public opinion about certain aspects of society had changed and even though both forms of media were set in the same timeshare some themes had been eliminated or turned on their heads. Now both these media were made in different styles with Drachma made in the gothic style. This is apparent with the Supernatural aspect of Drachma and his Vampire kin. Stokerââ¬â¢s descriptions of Drachma are always set as comparisons to animals so even when In human form Drachma Is not quite human but rather meeting far more unnatural. In Nonstarter the style Is the one of the time being German expressionism with themes prevalent throughout the film, the most obvious being the use of shadows to signify darkness and evil as well as the unknown. This is best captured with the powerful Image of count Errol walking up the stairs to attack Nina with his eerie shadow adding to the sense of darkness and mystery. Drachma had many themes but like Nonstarter was an expression of the times In which they were conceived In, so many themes in Drachma did not make the transition. Gender Hierarchy was viewed as an Important cog of Victorian culture and that held true throughout the book with the submissive, helpless females needing the help of the apparent stronger sex, males. The only exception to this is Mina but even then she is only able to by having ââ¬Å"a manââ¬â¢s brainâ⬠. Christian salvation and imagery was not part of the transformation process into nonstarter as being an important theme in Drachma is non-existent In Nonstarter. A great scene to help show this Is the killing of Lucy where after being killed for a second time Lucy Is restored to ââ¬Å"unequalled sweetness ND purityââ¬â¢. SE of holy symbols only reinforces this theme with the crucifix and holy wafers making appearances. The theme of superstition vs.. Science is also at the forefront with the logical, rational dry Seward unable to explain the biting with all of his reasoning and it is only through superstition from a man of higher faith who is unable to uncover the mystery. Also w hen it comes to the hunting and killing of Drachma science is not enough to defeat the beast and faith Is needed to kill the monster. The big thing of the unknown ,strange east Invading progressive closed England was also not only an issue in the book but an issue at the time with high immigration rates making some conservative Englishmen very nervous. Nonstarter due to the time it was made after the 1st world war therefore had more themes applying to post war Germany and some themes from Drachma where completely rubbed out with the gender hierarchy almost reversed as the men look like bumbling and his blatant disregard of clues from a book of vampires accompanied by Errol being deterred by the rosary the only mention of these two themes. Religion vs.. Science wasnââ¬â¢t as big of as issue as at the time of nonstarter. This was different for Drachma as Charles Darningââ¬â¢s origin of species had Just been published; challenging the faith of many Christians perhaps leading conservative Abram Stoker to show that religion is still important. In the sassââ¬â¢s this wasnââ¬â¢t as big of an issue and therefore was not a theme in the film. WWW was the bloodiest war in human history at that point and the Spanish influenza had Just ripped its way through Europe. This is reflected in the way Count Errol brings death to Thomas Hatterââ¬â¢s city with the scene f the coffins being taken down the street. You will notice that Count Oarlocks teeth are different to Drachmaââ¬â¢s. Errol has the teeth of a rat rather than the stereotypical enlarged canines. Also his arrival is matched by some rats who are also bringers of plague. So count Errol could be a symbol for the rat as he brings what is reported in the film as plague. All in all I believe Transformation to be a useful tool as it can expose people who enjoyed the original to something different and in Drachmas case show a great contrast between different times and different people. Achondroplasia Essay Example For Students
Achondroplasia Essay AchondroplasiaThere are many conditions and diseases that can cause short stature, dwarfism. Some of these conditions involve a bone disorder the bones do not grow and develop normally. These conditions are called skeletal dysplasias or chondrodystrophies. People with these conditions of short stature often refer to themselves as dwarfs, little people, or short-statured persons. More than 100 skeletal dysplasias have been discovered. Of these, achondroplasia is the most common. It occurs in all races and with equal frequency in males and females, but is a rare disease. An individual with achondroplasia has disproportionate short stature, which means the head is large and the arms and legs are short compared, to the chest. This shortness is particularly noticeable in the upper arms and thighs. Other signs are a large forehead, a flat or even depressed area at the base of the nose, a protruding jaw, and sometimes the teeth are crowded and the upper and lower teeth may be badly aligned. An adult with achondroplasia usually has an exaggerated forward curve to the lower spine. The legs of a person with achondroplasia almost always become bowed and the elbows often cannot be straightened completely. Sometimes the person has limited twisting ability at the elbows. The hands are short, and the feet are short and flat. Another sign is double jointedness, caused by loose ligaments in some joints. Achondroplastic children can flex their finger, wrist, hip, and knee joints to an extreme degree because of this. These signs are usually apparent at birth, and ach ondroplasia can be diagnosed at that time. Affected men average 51.8 inches in height, while women average 48.6 inches. There is no relationship between the height of the parents and the adult height of their children with achondroplasia. Children with achondroplasia develop slower. It takes them along time to gain proper head control, because of the extremely large head the neck muscles have to be strong enough to support it. Children with achondroplasia commonly get middle-ear infections in the first five or six years of life, probably due to abnormal drainage of the tube from the middle ear to the throat. Weight control is a frequent and lifelong problem for many people with this disorder. Both children and adults must be careful of what they eat because they are prone to add excess weight. The basic cause is faulty development of the bone structure. If these infections are not recognized and treated, or are resistant to treatment, the child may sustain significant hearing loss. Dental problems caused by overcrowding of teeth (especially those of the upper jaw) may occur. Malocclusion often results and makes good oral hygiene difficult. In addition to ordinary dental care, orthodontic treatment may be necessary. Th e large head seen in achondroplasia is often confused with hydrocephalus (water on the brain). Hydrocephalus may develop in achondroplasia, but it rarely requires surgical treatment. It is important to measure the young childs head circumference regularly to distinguish hydrocephalus from normal head growth. Young children with achondroplasia are at increased risk for specific neurologic and respiratory problems. These result from smaller openings in the skull, particularly at the foramen magnum (or large window) at the base of the skull. In some cases, surgery is required to enlarge this opening and relieve pressure on the base of the brain and spinal cord. Common orthopedic problems in childhood include a reverse curvature (kyphosis) of the lower spine in infancy, and bowed legs, which may develop any time after children begin to walk. The spinal kyphosis usually resolves without treatment, but may require bracing or surgery if it persists. Bowed legs may be treated by bracing or orthopedic surgery. Older children and adults frequently experience fatigue, numbness, or pain in the lower back and thighs. Often these complaints are simple muscular problems that do not require special care. If they are persistent or severe, the person should be evaluated by a physician, perhaps a neurologist. Nerve or spinal-cord problems are common because of the narrow spinal canal, particularly in the lower back. .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .postImageUrl , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:hover , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:visited , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:active { border:0!important; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:active , .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636 .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u317502fc58c48dce311d6860b7fa2636:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: John Berger and History EssayMutations within a single gene cause achondroplasia. For Or Against School Uniform Essays - Uniforms, Childrens Clothing
For Or Against School Uniform SCHOOL UNIFORMS Good or Bad Idea The head teacher of a local primary school is thinking of introducing a school uniform. .Can uniforms really make a difference to a child's academic performance. . Would uniforms infringe on the child's creativity and self expression . Clothes don not make the child Reasons For School uniforms can put the emphasis on school work instead of dressing in designer wear. It may also help lower to lower school violence. In a time when school children are getting assaulted for designer jackets and shoes, uniforms may be exactly what is needed. Uniforms can also help to identify outsiders within a school. Drug dealers would have to wear uniforms in order to be able to roam the school grounds without being spotted. The uniforms can also help parents to save money. Designer clothes are expensive and a student would need to have at least five different outfits to wear to school. Where a child wearing uniform would only need two sets of clothes. School uniform also help to to erase lines between the social classes. Since all students will be dressed alike, it will be impossible to tell the difference from a student from a low income and one from a high income family. Reasons Against Arguments against school uniforms believe school uniforms will lessen children's individualism and creativity. It will infringe on students rights. Students have very little say in the daily routine of their lives, so deciding what to wear is one of the few methods students have to control their lives. Clains have been made that school uniforms enforce conformity rather than individuality. Some reasons given by students who do not wish to wear a school uniform. Doses not allow freedom of expression No Choice Can't wear logos I will look like everyone else Not my style Limited colour and fabric Anoher claim is, if you take away a child's self expression through clothing, you force that child to express his or herself in other ways. This might even force a child to resort to even more violent forms of expression and continue to disrupt the class. Conclusion In today's society, students are fighting each other in schools because of ther students that wear rival gang colours and clothing. Children whose parents cannot afford designer clothes are automatically put out of the in crowd and they may feel unhappy and left out. A school uniform would mean students would not be judged by what they wear, instead they will be judged on their personality. Can uniforms make a difference? It may be a start. Uniforms will give all stuents a chance to fit in regardless of their social background. They will also take the students focus off having the right clothes and put it back on having the right attitude. I feel school uniforms are a good idea because, they help the students to keep focused on academics and improve their behaviour. Even after school hours, while they are in their school uniform, they would be easily identified as a member of the school. However, we cannot let the term free country becoming meaningless by taking away more and more student choices. If students are unable to express themselves through their clothing, we must be sure to provide alternative forums for students to develop a sense of self. Social Issues
